All You Need to Know to Make a Cool and Refreshing Cup of Java
It’s July and we’re in the midst of one of the worst heat waves we’ve ever seen in Texas. You savor that morning cup of coffee, but who wants to drink a hot beverage when it’s already 80 degrees outside? You can, however, get the caffeine your body craves and stay cool—with a cold brew. Of course, you can simply pour your coffee over ice, but that’s not the same thing. Whereas iced coffee can be a bit watered down, a good cold brew will be robust and rich.
What’s the Best Method for Making Cold Brew Coffee
The best things take time, and it’s no exception with cold brew coffee. To get the full flavor of the bean, grind your beans at the coarsest setting on your grinder. Mix them with filtered water, cover them, put them in the refrigerator, and let them steep for at least 12-24 hours, depending on how strong you like your coffee (At The Legal Café, we’ve found our sweet spot for a rich and flavorful cup of cold brew at 24 hours). As the ground beans sit in the water, the flavor of coffee will gradually infuse the water. When you’re ready for that cup of coffee, strain the coffee grounds, leaving only your cold brew concentrate.
Not sure how to get the right strength to your cold brew? It’s pretty easy to adjust. As a general rule, start with a one-to-four ratio of beans to water, which will produce a concentrate. You can then add water to get the richness that you want. At The Legal Café, we have found that one part water to two parts of cold brew concentrate works best.
Are There Other Benefits of a Cold Brew (Besides Keeping You Cool)?
Absolutely. Here are just a few of the reasons to consider a cold brew:
- The cold brewing process generally leaves coffee tasting less acidic or bitter, producing a coffee that’s smoother and sweeter to the taste.
- The cold brewing process allows you to get the fuller flavor of the bean
- Cold brews can actually save you time at the beginning of the day. Make a half gallon over the weekend and keep it in the fridge. You won’t have to wait for the pot to brew when you’re getting ready for work. Just pour a cup and go.
- Cold brews are generally easier on the stomach, as the cold brewing process produces a coffee that’s nearly 70% less acidic. It’s a great option for anyone with a sensitive stomach.
